Police Officer

Definition

Public Safety and police work related to the maintenance of law and order, protection of life and property, and prevention and suppression of crime; all other related work, as required.

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the sergeant or the officer-in-charge on the shift.

Performs functions based on defined policies, procedures and standard practice, but on occasion is required to make decisions which involve choice of actions, which are generally within limits defined by policies, procedures, practice, and instructions. Must use judgment when responding to unique incidents. Instructions are usually given orally; performance is reviewed by reviewing reports and observation of activities.

May supervise other officers, if assigned as officer-in-charge.

Job Environment

Work is generally performed in the field, under varying weather conditions, with exposure to all types of serious conditions affecting personal safety; including violent persons; work is also performed in the officer under typical office conditions. Required to work beyond regular schedule on a regular basis to complete reports or investigations in progress or to appear in court as necessary. May work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Operates automobile, computer, medical equipment and standard office equipment, communications equipment, also used weapons (firearms) and may use photographic equipment, and other police equipment, required to wear appropriate uniform and equipment.

Makes continuous contact with the general public during the course of daily work or assignments, as well as other departments, such as the State and local highway departments, the fire department, and others, such as the district attorney's office, prosecutors, court personnel, ambulance crews, and Federal, State, and local police agencies.

Has access to confidential information relating to criminal investigations and records, reports, and related information.

Errors and mistakes of judgment could endanger personal safety, safety of fellow officers, and the general public, and could cause delay or loss of service, monetary loss to the Town, damage to equipment and buildings, and have legal repercussions.

Essential Functions

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended on ly as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.

Patrols assigned area; performs security checks, looking for broken windows, open doors, etc.; investigates unusual conditions and situations, and assists the general public.

Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, including the full array of possible situations, from police to medical calls; investigates various types of crimes, disturbances, accidents, and other emergencies, and reports findings to superior officers; investigates other matters as assigned.

Makes arrests for violations of law; gathers evidence and prepares reports for court cases; appears in court to present evidence; serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately, when so directed by the superior officer. Prepares and files detailed narrative reports.

Maintains police weapons and equipment as needed.

Assists citizens requesting information; when necessary, and refers them to persons or agencies where they can obtain further assistance; preserves the peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes and family quarrels.

Responsible for the securing, receipt, and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.

Provides emergency medical assistance as needed; may administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

May assist supervisors, prepare reports and undertake administrative tasks.

May serve as officer-in-charge.

May perform crime scene investigations, accident investigation, photography, digital imaging, finger printing, latent print examination, and other assignments.

Officers qualified by specialized training may perform additional functions.

A Detective Police Officer provides follow-up on cases and performs long-term investigations, when needed, in addition to investigation of crime scenes, accident investigations, photography, digital imaging, finger printing, latent print examination, and other assignments. Conducts criminal investigations by interviewing witnesses, victims and suspects, reviewing records, examining physical evidence, etc. Prepares reports makes determination regarding facts and circumstances surrounding a criminal incident regarding possible charges or actions which should be taken.

Performs all other duties as assigned or as directed by emergency and non-emergency situations.

Recommended Minimum Qualification

        Education & Experience

        Graduation from high school or equivalent and successful completion of police recruit training program. Successful completion of reserves academy required for part-time and special officers.

        Special Requirements

        Graduate of Criminal Justice Police Academy (Reserve Academy required for part-time/special personnel), Massachusetts motor vehicles operator's license, Pistol permit, Certified first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ability to pass job-related medical, physical, and/or psychological examination, Required to successfully pass various certifications.

        Knowledge, Ability, & Skill

        Knowledge - Working knowledge of Massachusetts statutes, local laws, law enforcement rules and regulations, policies and procedures of the court system. Thorough knowledge of rules of conduct as they pertain to law enforcement officer carrying out duties.

        Ability - Ability to enforce the law impartially and to make sound judgements under stressful situations. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in general or detailed instructions. Ability to analyze and interpret laws, bylaws, rules, regulations, standards, and procedures, and apply them to specific situations. Ability to operate a computer.

        Skill - Must possess good problem solving skills, investigation and interrogation skills. Excellent communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Performance of work involves standing, walking, and driving for long periods of time. Physical agility is required to access all types of areas. Emergencies require the ability to use hands and fingers to operate firearms and other police equipment. May be required to push, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach with hands and arms. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. Police officers may be required to physically restrain person(s) during arrests, using standard police procedures.

Summary

A dispatcher serves as the principal link between citizens requesting service (by phone or in person) and Sutton's Emergency Services.

Duties & Responsibilities

Answer phone for the Police, Fire, and Highway Departments. Monitor and dispatch via radios for Police, Fire, Highway, and Rescue Personnel. Answer all requests for information and service in a prompt, polite and professional manner. Maintain daily logs and department paperwork in a neat efficient manner. Maintain strict confidentiality of all police related information at you disposal. Keep the dispatch office, squad room, and work areas in a neat and clean condition. Monitor prisoners and request medical and police assistance when necessary. Monitor the location and activity of shift officers to help insure their safety. Obey all Sutton Police Policies and Procedures. Obey all legal directives issued by the officer-in-charge of your shift. Never leave you post unless properly relieved by an officer with appropriate authority. Bring problems you observe to the attention of you shift commander. Familiarize yourself with all department paperwork, resource directories, town departments, teletype operations, Sutton streets and highways. Work shifts as assigned to meet the needs and objectives of the department.
